Brackets
Brackets have been placed around some words which mean they appear in the Greek text but may be omitted for readability or for clarity in English.
E.g. (the) God simply would read God in English but the definite article ‘the’ appears in the Greek text.
*A deponent relates to a verb which does not appear in the active voice. There is debate amongst Greek grammarians as to what a deponent means. Many take the view that deponent is middle in voice but functions as an active verb in meaning. However, there are those who believe there is no need for deponents as a middle deponent is simply a verb in the middle voice which is never written in the active voice.
